Comedian Vir Das has been awarded the International Emmy Award for Comedy at the Emmys’ this year for his Netflix special Vir Das: Landing. The award was shared with Derry Girls Season 3. Both titles were nominated alongside Le Flambeau from France and El Encargado from Argentina. Apart from Vir Das, other nominees from India included names such as Ektaa Kapoor, Shefali Shah, and Jim Sarbh. Post-ceremony, in an interview, the comedian recognised the exemplary work done by his other colleagues from India.
In an interview with NDTV, Vir Das praised Shefali Shah’s work even though she missed out on an Emmy for the Best Actress category for Delhi Crime 2. He said, “Shefali Shah is a once in a generation talent. I really think she is India’s Meryl Streep. I really just learnt a lot by being around Shefali.” Shefali Shah lost the award to Mexican actress Karla Souza for her work in the series La Cada [Dive]. The actresses were nominated alongside Connie Nielsen for the Danish film The Dreamer, Becoming Karen Blixen, and I Hate Suzie Too, and Billie Piper for I Hate Suzie Too.
Vir Das added in the interview that Jim Sarbh has also proved himself with his talent, and what matters to him more is that he could be in the same room with such exceptional talents for the last few days. Jim Sarbh was nominated for an International Emmy Award for Best Performance by an Actor for his role in the web series Rocket Boys. However, he was defeated by English actor Martin Freeman.
Vir Das took to Instagram shortly after winning the Emmy for Best Comedy to share photos of himself with the coveted prize. The first image is a close-up of him wearing a black formal suit and carrying the trophy. He is also seen posing with his colleagues in another photo. In the caption he wrote, “For India For Indian comedy. Every breath, every word. Thank you to the iEmmys for this incredible honour.”
Upon winning the award, the comedian stated, “This moment is truly surreal – an incredible honor that feels like a dream. Winning an Emmy for ‘Vir Das: Landing’ in the ‘Comedy Category’ is not just a milestone for me but for Indian comedy as a whole.” He added that his journey from making local stories to winning a worldwide honour has been both tough and rewarding, and Netflix has played an important role in that development.
The 51st International Emmy Awards ceremony was held in New York City on November 20.
