Vidya Balan: India Didn’t Have Religious Identity Before; We’re More Polarised Today
Vidya Balan says people are attaching themselves to ideas and concepts with their own convenience "at a very superficial level."

Vidya Balan says that she feels India has become more polarised than ever and people are desperately searching for a sense of identity, thanks to social media.

Recently, the Do Aur Do Pyaar actress appeared on Unfiltered by Samdish where she openly discussed the “growing polarisation” in the country.

“I just feel that we are definitely more polarised. I think, as a nation, we did not have a religious identity before but now, I don’t know why this..it’s not just politics, it is also social media. Because we are all lost in this world and looking for an identity, which we don’t have organically. We are looking for things to attach ourselves to. That’s what I genuinely feel,” Vidya said.

The 45-year-old actress further argued that this is primarily happening because “we all need a sense of belonging”. She claimed that people are attaching themselves to ideas and concepts with their own convenience “at a very superficial level.”

“A lot of times I see that people have opinions on things that they do not know anything about. How is that possible? People don’t watch films and comment on it. They do not know what the issue at hand is. I was out promoting a film called Kahaani 2 when demonetisation happened and every journalist had asked me about it. I did not know anything about it. To date, I do not know what demonetisation is besides the fact that they revoked Rs 1000 notes overnight. I think everyone wants to give an opinion without having an opinion,” she continued.

Vidya concluded by saying that the issue is not just with India but with the entire world. “The world is polarised today it is not just one country. We are all polarised,” she said.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Vidya Balan was recently seen in Do Aur Do Pyaar with Pratik Gandhi. News18 Showsha’s review of the film read, “Films like this don’t get made very often and it is this novelty that makes it a cut above the rest. It also reinforces the fact that simplicity is bliss and in most times, simplicity is more than enough to hold your undivided attention and it is the need for the same that keeps you going.”

Next, Vidya will reprise her role as Manjulika in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. The film will also star Kartik Aaryan and Madhuri Dixit in key roles.
