M Night Shyamalan has another gritty tale up his sleeves that is likely to leave the audience with sleepless nights. The director, known for chilling movies like The Sixth Sense, Split, The Visit, and Old is heralding a fresh horror mystery titled Trap. Starring Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue, and Saleka Shyamalan in prominent roles, the trailer was unveiled by Warner Bros on April 18. Trap’s first look was unveiled at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this year. The film will hit the silver screens on August 2.
The trailer treats viewers to a heartwarming father-daughter equation. Josh Hartnett as a caring father brings his daughter Jody to a concert of some fictitious artist named Lady Raven. The girl, seemingly excited, enjoys the superb performance when Harnett leaves her in the crowd for a washroom visit. On his way out of the stadium to the common corridor, he notices police trucks and tight security. Upon asking a staff member what was happening he gets to know that the concert is being staged to catch a serial killer who is expected to attend the event. Because of the way he kills his victims the serial killer has attained the moniker of a Butcher.
But typical to M Night Shyamalan’s storytelling techniques, Trap comes with a twist. It is revealed that Josh Hartnett’s character is the serial killer the authorities are looking for. In the washroom when he takes out his cellphone, there pops up a visual CCTV footage of a young male victim who he had held hostage already. The trailer concludes with Harnett laughing maniacally to himself.
At CinemaCon, M Night Shyamalan revealed his decision to choose Josh Hartnett in the role of a serial killer. “What I’m looking for is someone that’s willing to just let go completely, give themselves over like a play to the movie, and leap — don’t protect yourself. That beautiful electricity that requires the right actor at the right time in their life. And that’s where Josh was when I met him," he was quoted as saying by Variety.
Harnett previously played important roles in the British anthology television series Black Mirror and Christopher Nolan’s award-winning film Oppenheimer.
