It goes without saying that Govinda has been one of the most versatile stars in the Hindi film industry. Although he climbed the stairs of success with his impeccable comic timing, he has shown his intense serious side in films like Khuddar and Shola Aur Shabnam. even playing a psychotic serial killer in the film Shikari. Govinda was one of the most bankable stars in the 90s and his charm and dancing skills led to heavy footfall at the theatres. From the mid 2000s, Govinda’s career turned topsy turvy and he could not pull crowds to the theatre like he used to before. During this period, he gave some hits with multi-starrer films like Bhagam Bhag and Partner.
Govinda’s solo films during the 2010s were poorly received and most critics were of the opinion that the former star was caught in a time wrap, unable to let go of the 90s and tailor himself to the new sensibilities of the 2010s. He attempted two comeback films, namely Aa Gaya Hero and Rangeela Raja, released in 2017 and 2019 respectively. Both the films were big critical and commercial failures.
Rangeela Raja was a remake of the Tamil film Netrikan starring Rajinikanth. While the original, which was released way back in 1981 was positively received during its time, Rangeela Raja was dubbed as trying to profit off an obsolete story which no longer appeals to the present generation. Govinda’s portrayal of a middle aged womaniser was criticised and called borderline misogynistic. The film was initially supposed to release along with Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan’s Thugs of Hindostan, but got postponed due to censorship issues.
The failure of Rangeela Raja has kept Govinda away from further films and he has not appeared in any project thereafter. He is often seen as judges and guest of honour at reality shows, particularly related to dance.
