Actor Kamal Sadanah began his film career in the 1992 movie ‘Bekhudi’ alongside Kajol. However, before gaining recognition as a mainstream hero, he faced a profound personal tragedy. In a recent interview, Kamal shared the heart-wrenching account of the time when his father, producer Brij Sadanah, tragically took the lives of Kamal’s entire family before taking his own life.
Despite sustaining a gunshot wound in the neck, Kamal survived the horrific ordeal which claimed the lives of his father, mother, and sister. Reflecting on the traumatic experience, Kamal expressed how witnessing his family’s murder had a lasting impact on him, causing immense mental anguish.
In a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Kamal recounted the harrowing incident, narrating how the bullet miraculously passed through his neck without causing fatal damage, “I have always looked at it that way… I was also shot, I had a bullet go through one side of my neck and come out on the other side of my neck and I have survived it. There’s no logical reason for me to survive. It’s almost as if the bullet dodged every nerve and came out on the other side. There’s a reason why I survived it. Let me move ahead and let me find that reason, let me live well,” he shared.
Acknowledging the complex nature of his father’s actions, Kamal emphasized that one tragic event does not define his entire family or his upbringing. Despite the profound loss he endured, Kamal bravely recounted the desperate moments following the shooting, where he rushed his bleeding family members to the hospital even while he himself was injured. He continued, “It was a bad incident that happened but it doesn’t mean that my entire childhood or my family in their entirety were bad people or my father was a bad person… doesn’t mean that. I carried my mother and my sister to the hospital while they were bleeding and at that time I didn’t realise that I was also shot. The hospital didn’t have enough beds so my friend took me to another hospital. I just told the doctor that you keep my mother and sister alive. I was also trying to check on my father.”
Having undergone surgery to treat his injuries, Kamal recalled waking up to the devastating reality of his family’s untimely demise. Despite the trauma, he chose to reside in the same house where the tragic incident unfolded, demonstrating resilience in the face of profound loss, “When I woke up, they took me home and I saw my whole family lying down dead in front of my eyes. I am not the only person in the world who has seen tragedy. There are a lot of people in the world who have seen tragedies.”
While Kamal’s journey has been marred by tragedy, he continues to contribute to the film industry through supporting roles, as seen in his recent portrayal of Sam Manekshaw in Pippa.
