Jackie Shroff On Abusing In Viral BTS Clip From Polio Awareness Ad: 'I've Been Using It Since Teenage'
Jackie Shroff’s hilarious reactions and use of the Marathi expletive “maushi chi…,” from polio awareness ad's BTS video become a pop culture phenomenon.

Jackie Shroff’s rise to fame wasn’t just about his blockbuster films — there’s also a memorable 1998/99 ad for the government’s polio eradication campaign. While the ad was a hit, Jackie’s experience wasn’t so smooth. The actor struggled with the raw Hindi dialogue, leading to some comedic behind-the-scenes moments. A viral BTS video revealed Jackie’s hilarious reactions and frequent use of the Marathi expletive “maushi chi…,” which has since become a pop culture staple.

Jackie Shroff recently talked about his famous Marathi phrase from the 1998 polio ad. On Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, he said it had mixed reactions but ultimately helped raise awareness about polio and vaccination. “Some people like it; some don’t,” he said. When asked if he still gets asked about it, he said, “I tell them, if nothing else, it at least helped people learn about polio and the importance of administering the drops to kids.”

Looking back at what really happened on sets that prompted the hilarious BTS, Jackie said that he struggled with the Hindi. “I tried hard (to deliver the lines). Some words are difficult to pronounce, right? That’s what happened that day. But we later created another ad, which turned out really well,” he recalled.

Jackie Shroff confessed that he still uses the phrase. He said, “I’ve been using it since I was a teenager. I use it only on myself when I’m frustrated, as an alternative to expressions like ‘yaar… uff…‘”

Jackie Shroff is known for using his Instagram to spotlight various causes, including environmental conservation. He’s particularly recognised for carrying a plant to nearly every event he attends, aiming to promote tree planting and raise awareness about pollution.

On the professional front, Jackie Shroff has two exciting projects lined up. He will appear in Singham Again, directed by Rohit Shetty, alongside a star-studded cast including Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Tiger Shroff and Arjun Kapoor. Additionally, Shroff will feature in Baby John, an action drama directed by Kalees, which also stars Varun Dhawan and Keerthy Suresh. This film is a remake of Atlee’s Tamil hit Theri (2016).
