A Bollywood commercial film usually consists of drama, twists, action and an item song. The item numbers often face criticism due to its lyrics and objectification of women. Director Amar Kaushik of blockbuster film Stree 2 believes that such songs should be used as a tool to present the film’s message, while taking the narrative forward. Stree 2 features an item number, which was performed by Tamannaah Bhatia. Amar Kaushik said in an interview that it’s possible to deliver a masala film with an item song, while respecting women and with meaningful lyrics. In an exclusive interview, the director presented his views on the thought process involved in making the item song Aaj Ki Raat in Stree 2.
Amar Kaushik calls the inclusion of an item song a must for delivering a full package in the film. He, however, adds that “one must be aware of what to say”. Before making the Aaj Ki Raat song, the director said that he wanted to serve the storyline without compromising on quality or respectfulness. “Logon ko lagta hai item song hai toh gande bol hi hone chahiye (People perceive that item songs always hold bad words) but I was clear that while the song should be entertaining and fit the film, it should have meaningful lyrics,” said Amar Kaushik.
He briefed his music composer and songwriter to not go below the belt because that’s not what the film should be according to him. He calls the film to be politically correct at some places when required. “Kuch cheezo mein film politically correct honi chahiye. Aap bolo aap jo bolna chahte ho aur aadaein bhi honi chahiye lekin jab aap lyrics suno toh lage ki ‘yeh toh badi baat bol di hai’, aisa baad mein samajh ayega. (Some elements in the film should be politically correct. You say whatever you want with a little glamour but after hearing the lyrics, people must wonder about its depth and meaning)”
Amar Kaushik further said that he has always respected women as he has grown up among sisters. He avoids making films in which the women’s struggles are portrayed as normal.
