Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange aka Doctor Strange, was last seen in 2022’s Multiverse of Madness. While the MCU film opened to mixed reception from the audience, leaving hopes for a third installment, director Scott Derrickson says his version of the sequel was different from what was shown. For the unversed, two different filmmakers had worked on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While Derrickson developed the initial stage of the film, it was Sam Raimi who took on the final version after the former’s departure. Speaking on the same lines, Scott Derrickson recently shared that his version of the film was different from Raimi’s.
In response to fan questions on X (formerly known as Twitter), the director clarified his stance. As a fan asked, “Would your film be very different from what was done in Sam Raimi’s sequel?” Derrickson replied, “Entirely.” While not much is known about what the director had in mind for the sequel before making his exit from the project, it can be said that travelling across the multiverse would have a fresher dynamic.

Notably, Derrickson, who was initially roped in to helm the 2022 film, left the project due to creative differences with the studio. A year after its release, the filmmaker opened up about his exit.
“All I can say is that what we said publicly is exactly the truth. We had real creative differences. You know, the movie I wanted to make and how I wanted to make it was different than — it was just increasingly obvious that we were pulling against each other. And that’s how you make a really bad movie, I think. When the producer or the studio and the filmmaker are making different movies, you end up with a monstrosity and, you know, that’s why I had to bounce,” he said during The Discourse podcast.
On the other hand, screenwriter Jade Halley Bartlett also shared his experience of working on an early draft of the MCU sequel with Scott Derrickson. Speaking to ComicBook.com, he said that there were two versions that he worked on. “There’s the Raimi, Michael Waldron version, which is exquisite, and I love both of them. Then, I was with Scott Derrickson. We developed it for about a year in the room with Kevin Feige and Eric Hauserman Carroll, Lou D’Esposito and Richie Palmer. It was Scott and it was really exciting and it was really fun,” he continued.
