The unexpected success of Richard Gadd’s Netflix series Baby Reindeer has caught even its creator and cast by surprise. Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 35-year-old comedian shared that he did not think the show would go on to become such a hit. This mini-series has drawn global attention for its standout performances and the sensitivities with which it handles each of its characters. One of the most empathetic characters of the show is that of Nava Mau. Mau plays Teri, the girlfriend of the main character – comedian and bartender Donny Dunn. Teri is a transgender therapist and Mau’s portrayal has been widely praised.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Nava Mau discussed the show’s great success. She reflected on her initial expectations, saying, “I kept saying to Richard (Gadd) whoever is meant to see the show is gonna see the show.”
“It seems like a lot of people were meant to see the show. We’re talking about abuse. We are walking about trauma. We are talking about shame. It’s beautiful to see so many people engaging in that conversation,” she added.
Talking about the real-life ramifications of the show, she said, “I got to play the Teri that comes from the script and in was crafted in collaboration with so many people. We all came together and put our little pieces in Teri. That is who I think is on screen.”

Before this, Richard Gadd himself had also spoken about the show’s origins with Entertainment Tonight. Gadd, a Scottish writer, actor and comedian, had revealed that Baby Reindeer began as a stage play based on his personal experiences with a stalker. The woman referred to as Martha Scott in the show, allegedly sent Gadd thousands of emails, tweets and hours of voicemails over six years.
Meanwhile, as the cast and the whole team behind the show have been celebrating the success and praise of the drama, there has also been some trouble mounting for them.
Despite Gadd’s efforts to prevent viewers from guessing about the real-life identities of his stalker and rapist, people have been trying to make some wild guesses. A woman named Fiona Harvey has even come forward, claiming that the character of Martha is based on her. In an interview with Piers Morgan, Harvey denied many aspects of the show’s plot and said that she plans to sue both Gadd and Netflix for her portrayal, reports Huffington Post.
The mini-drama series Baby Reindeer was released on Netflix on April 11, 2024. The series centers around Richard Gadd’s troubling relationship with a female stalker and the impact it has on him, forcing him to confront a deeply buried trauma.
