After winning the recent Ghosi by-elections in Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district, Samajwadi Party (SP) is out with its brand new posters and hoardings with the tagline ‘Ab Ki Baar, PDA (Picchda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak) Sarkar’.
As every move in political circles is based on certain calculations, political analysts in Uttar Pradesh did not take any longer to decode SP’s move to woo the Schedule Caste (SC), Other Backward Community (OBC) and Schedule Tribe (ST) for the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls.
“SP won the bye-elections held recently at Mau’s Ghosi assembly seat, which is said to be OBC, SC and ST dominating seat. However, after the party’s success, which also gave a boost to SP’s morale, the party is all set to play a ‘PDA’ card in the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls, portraying it as the ‘PDA’ sympathisers,” said Shashikant Pandey, head of the political science department, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University.
The political analysts also pointed out that playing the PDA card or wooing traditional Dalit voters will not be a cakewalk for the SP in the upcoming polls. “One has to understand that the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Polls is altogether going to be a different ball game. Hence, no parallel lines can be drawn between the recent Ghosi bypolls and Lok Sabha elections. In the recent bye-election, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) backed out and hence its traditional Dalit vote bank diverted towards SP leading to its victory. But this won’t be the case in the upcoming LS polls as the BSP has categorically denied any coalition with the NDA or INDIA bloc. In such a situation, wooing the core BSP voters will not be an easy task for the SP,” said Pandey.
Also, recently, BSP chief Mayawati in a meeting with the party workers said it’s time to gear up for the upcoming elections. BSP had announced to go solo in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls. It also stated it won’t be part the Opposition’s INDIA bloc citing that the party had to bear more loss by forging alliances as its votes got clearly divided.
