Baby Skin Care 101: Essential Tips for Soft and Healthy Skin
A baby’s skin is much thinner than adult skin, which means it's more vulnerable to damage from external factors such as temperature changes, dryness, and even the ingredients in everyday baby skincare products

When a newborn is brought home, the first thing parents want to do is keep them warm and nourished. When it comes to baby skincare, simplicity is the key. Babies have unique skin needs and understanding them can often be overwhelming for parents. A baby’s skin is much thinner than adult skin, which means it’s more vulnerable to damage from external factors such as temperature changes, dryness, and even the ingredients in everyday baby skincare products. While there is no one-size-fits-all routine, certain tried and tested practices can help you protect your baby’s sensitive skin.

Use Toxin-free Baby Products

Baby skin is much thinner than adult skin and more prone to dryness, irritation, and reactions. Therefore, it is preferable to use products that contain 100% toxin-free formula which can help keep the soft skin of the baby clean and fresh.

In this pursuit, Deepak Kumar, co-founder & Director, Kinu says, “As a parent, ensuring the safety and well-being of your baby’s skin is a top priority. So using products that contain natural ingredients and are eco-friendly in nature helps prevent dryness and irritation and provides gentle nourishment while keeping the skin clean and fresh. Brands that focus on using natural and safe ingredients ensure that parents can confidently care for their baby’s sensitive skin, fostering long-term skin health from an early age.”

It is always preferable to avoid regular soaps particularly those with fragrances or dyes. For newborns, it’s also recommended to bathe them only two to three times a week. Over-bathing can deplete their skin’s moisture and cause it to dry out. Instead, focus on gentle sponge baths and keep the skin moisturized.

Moisturize Regularly

Keeping your baby’s skin moisturized is one of the most important steps in maintaining its softness. On this note, Kumar adds, “When choosing body lotion for babies try considering those products that contain ingredients like olive oil and shea butter. It not only helps keep the baby’s skin moisturized day and night but also hydrates the skin without causing any irritation.”

Lastly, after bath time, gently pat your baby’s skin dry with a soft towel and immediately apply moisturizer to lock in the moisture. Avoid rubbing the skin harshly, as this can lead to irritation. Regular moisturizing will not only help in maintaining the softness but also in strengthening the baby’s skin barrier, making it less susceptible to rashes and irritation.

Protect your Baby’s Skin from the Sun

When going outdoors it is important to keep your baby from getting direct exposure to the sun. The delicate skin of the baby cannot handle the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. Therefore, it is always important to dress the newborn in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and also remember to use a wide-brimmed hat to protect their face. For babies over six months, you can apply a baby-safe sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to exposed areas like the face and hands. Be sure to choose a sunscreen that is free from harmful chemicals, such as parabens and oxybenzone, and reapply it regularly when your baby is out in the sun.

Prevent and Treat Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is one of the most common skin issues faced by babies. It usually occurs due to wet diapers, chafing, or sensitivity to diaper materials. To prevent diaper rash, it’s important to change your baby’s diaper frequently and allow their skin to air out whenever possible. Always prefer using thick barrier cream, such as one with zinc oxide, after every diaper change to create a protective layer between your baby’s skin and any potential irritants. If your baby develops a rash, keep the area clean, and dry, and apply a medicated cream recommended by your pediatrician.

Caring for your baby’s skin doesn’t have to be complicated. By following the above tips you can make sure that your baby’s skin stays soft and healthy. Lastly, always remember to consult your pediatrician if you’re unsure about any products or treatments, as they can guide you to what’s best for your baby’s individual skin needs.
