Wrestling victory makes Kochi euphoric

For them, there was no doubt that Sushil Kumar would bring laurels for the country. But Yogeswar Dutt’s bronze medal came as a pleasant surprise.  “We stayed awake at night and were glued to the TV sets. All our prayers bore fruit when the result was declared,” they said.M M Salim, wrestling coach and the state secretary of Kerala State Indian Style Wrestling Association says that the excitement was at its zenith the moment Yogeswar’s victory was declared.“The enthusiasm will of course spurt in West Kochi as it abounds in wrestling enthusiasts,” he said. Salim added that it wasn’t the first time that they are getting such a euphoric response from various quarters.“It happened last time too when Vijayendar won the medal for boxing. The number of applicants was so high that we could not accommodate more than 120,” says a happy Salim.  Niyas M I, a wrestling student and Mahatma Gandhi University champion said that though he is fasting for Ramdan, he could not keep away from watching the wrestling competition. “We have a television set installed in our gymnasium.All our activities are put on hold when the competition starts. India’s win has  given us the energy to pursue our passion, ie wrestling,” he says.Another university champion Ratheesh M R is a bit disappointed that Amit Kumar could not make it to the wrestling competition. But he says he was certain that Sushil Kumar would be victorious.Salim opines that passion for wrestling is tremendous in Ernakulam, with even girls showing interest. “ Currently, I have about six girl students, and their parents have all been supportive,” Salim says. The coach says that they did not admit any student without their parent’s consent. “Wrestling involvesrisks.
