New Delhi: A woman committed suicide by jumping in front of a metro train at the busy underground Chandni Chowk station here.

Twenty-five-year old Paramjeet Singh Kaur managed to dodge security at the Delhi Metro station and leaped on the tracks in platform two of the station at around 0920 hrs (IST).

The train was on the Central Secretariat-Viswavidyalaya route.

She was a resident of Ganesh Nagar in west Delhi.

"The 25-year-old woman jumped in front of the train and died on the spot. It is a sad event for all of us, but when someone wants to commit suicide, you can hardly do anything," said a spokesperson of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

He said the incident took place when the train was approaching the platform.

"The train service was disrupted for nearly 30 minutes. We stopped the train service at that time on platform number two, but things have returned to normalcy now," he said.

Officials said that the case was second of its kind in any Delhi Metro network, but did not specify when the first incident took place.

Police said the body had been sent for post-mortem examination, but "from initial investigation it looks like a case of suicide".

Nearly 475,000 people commute on the metro, the sleek world-class public transport medium of the national capital.

The network that started operation in 2002 covers an area of 62 km.
