Waste plant in Piravom soon

PIRAVOM: The Piravom panchayat has decided to build a waste treatment plant in the Kannettumala junkyard here. Panchayat president Sabu K Jacob made the announcement after deliberations with residents. Approximately Rs 40 lakh will be spent on the construction of the plant. The district panchayat would contribute Rs 25 lakh, Jose K Mani MP Rs 5 lakh and the balance amount would be adjusted from the panchayat fund, Jacob said.Residents of Kannettumala protested on Monday against the dumping of waste in the yard. They obstructed the vehicle carrying waste from the panchayat. The police tried to intervene, but to no avail. A team led by panchayat vice-president Annamma Domy also failed to convince the people.On Tuesday, Jacob, along with members Moly Peter, K N Chandrasekhran and K K Biju and secretary Shibu George, visited Kannettumala and held talks with the public and assured that the panchayat would construct a waste treatment plant. Later, the locals allowed the waste to be dumped in the yard. “The plant will be completed before December 31,” Jacob said.
