An intolerable stench from a tank in the constituency of Environment and Ecology Minister Sogadu Shivanna (Tumkur city) has ensured that the residents of Siddaganga Mutt’s Kyathsandra area flee the vicinity.
Around 50 households and some 10 shops in the vicinity have reportedly vacated and downed shutters.
A radius of one kilometre area wears a deserted look.
The ‘gundlamma’ tank has been turned into a dumping yard for solid waste generated in the city, which also has slaughter houses and cattle markets.
The elected representatives turned a blind eye and the city municipal council (CMC) washed its hands off the disposal of solid waste.
Trouble broke out when the Under Ground Drainage (UGD) of Siddaganga Mutt which shelters about 5,000 students developed a technical problem.
As the contractor went missing, the UGD was diverted to the tank through a pipeline last week.
This was sufficient for the already filthy tank to get further contaminated and emanate a foul smell.
The railway station and bus stand is close to the tank, making it impossible for commuters to tolerate the stench.
The CMC is clueless as how to drain out the filth from the tank since all its channels are blocked.
CMC president Devika Siddalinge Gowda told Express that a satellite survey would be conducted to find out the channels.
She informed that a biotechnological company has taken samples to its laboratory and would give a report shortly, based on that which parasite to be released into the tank for cleaning would be decided.
Shivanna said that he would take all steps to clean the tank.
