V Vijay Sai Reddy,Honorary Consul General of Georgia,Director, Reserve Bank of IndiaThis was probably how Vijay Sai Reddy's visiting card would have read had the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) not registered a case against him and arrested him on Monday. Now behind bars, Vijay Sai Reddy was trying to get diplomatic immunity by reportedly getting himself appointed as the honorary Consul General of Georgia in Hyderabad. (Georgia, once part of the Soviet Union,is now a sovereign state. But due to an adverse report by the CBI to the state government, the move was shelved. Also, Reddy was also being considered for the prestigious post of Director, RBI, which again did not materialise.Sources in Jagan camp disclosed to Express that soon after the CBI registered cases against Jagan Mohan Reddy, Vijay Sai and 72 others in August, 2011, Reddy, desperate to evade arrest, came up with certain bizarre ideas. One of them was grabbing the post of Consul General of Georgia.Sources said that using some of his contacts overseas, Vijay Sai Reddy allegedly managed to “impress” Georgia government following which a communication was reportedly sent to the Union ministry of external affairs, which in turn forwarded it to the state government seeking clearance for his appointment. The idea was to get diplomatic immunity so that he could evade the CBI dragnet.Subsequently, the government is understood to have written to the CBI seeking its remarks. Without a second thought, the CBI gave an adverse report following which the proposal was dropped.Unlike regular consuls, the honorary consul is not an employee of the sending country. They are generally dignitaries or persons of position in business and society in the receiving country, with a connection to the sending state.Besides, another proposal that was moved was for his appointment to the post of RBI director. Sources said the file pertaining to it even reached Delhi, but again, it was the CBI probe that came in the way.Sources, however, insist that Vijay Sai Reddy missed both the posts “narrowly”.In fact, both the proposals were being considered keeping in view Reddy’s background, which many say was quite impressive.Vijay Sai Reddy started his career as a chartered accountant and floated the firm “VS Reddy and Associates”, comprising eight partners. Slowly, he opened offices in Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.Thereafter, he served as director of the Oriental Bank of Commerce and was also a member of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) while working as vice-chairman of Jagati Publications.Reddy is said to be worth about Rs 200 crore.Interestingly, Vijay Sai Reddy has also prepared a detailed note specifying the dates and time when he was summoned by the CBI and the duration of time he spent there since the beginning (He is said to have been summoned at least 40 times) to place it before the court against the police custody sought by the CBI.
