The State Government is focussing on disaster management and precautionary measures and a series of steps have been initiated in this regard, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Tuesday.
He added that though the Revenue Department was taking preventive measures, efforts should also be initiated to prevent circumstances being created by people themselves leading to disasters. Inaugurating the observance of the Disaster Management Day under the aegis of State Disaster Management Authority here on Tuesday, Chandy said that the state at times is ill-equipped to deal with disasters, such as the Chala tanker lorry blaze.
“Movement of gas tankers through the roads is a major threat. Modern methods to ensure safety of gas tankers have to adopted. Above all, movement of gas though waterways is the safest alternative,’’ he said.
The state may get relief to a certain extent in the disaster management front once the Fire and Rescue Services are provided with ultramodern gadgets, Chandy hoped.
Presiding over the function, Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash said that a major reason for natural calamities was the excessive exploitation of nature. Though steps to ensure preparedness to face any calamity are needed, only an joint effort by the government, various agencies and the people would yield the desired results.
