New Delhi: A bandh called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal in Jammu to protest Taliban attack on Sikhs in Pakistan turned violent on Friday morning.
Protestors blocked the Jammu-Pathankot highway, damaged vehicles and forced shopkeepers to shut shops.
The police also beat up some protestors in Satwari, in an attempt to control the mob from getting violent.
The transport, trade and bar associations are also supporting the bandh along with the Sikh bodies in the city.
The BJP state unit is also supporting the bandh.
Taliban have forced several Sikh families to leave their homes in Aurakzai region after they failed to pay Rs 50 million as 'jaziya' (tax imposed on non-Muslims under Shariah law).
He said the bandh was called as an appeal to the Central government to exert pressure on Pakistan to "crush the nefarious activities of the Taliban".
