In a shocking case, an obsessive lover kidnapped an 11-month-old child in a bid to reunite with his estranged partner. The drama unfolded over 14 months, during which the kidnapper evaded the police by disguising himself as a holy man.
The accused, identified as Head Constable Tanuj Chahar from the UP Police Special Cell, had been romantically involved with the child’s mother, his cousin. When his relationship with her ended, he became increasingly obsessed and, in June of the previous year, abducted her daughter, Kuku, from their home in Jaipur. Chahar lived with the child in various locations, including Vrindavan, Mathura, and Aligarh, concealing his identity in a sadhu’s hut.
The situation took a poignant turn when Chahar was eventually apprehended near Agra. As police officers took the child from him and returned him to his mother, the toddler initially resisted, crying to return to his kidnapper. Chahar, visibly distraught, was seen weeping as he lost the child he had grown attached to. The scene left both the Jaipur Police and onlookers in shock.
Chahar never demanded a ransom for the child, who is also his nephew, making the case of kidnapping even more suspicious.
When Chahar’s love interest (Kuku’s mother) was married off to someone else, he travelled to Jaipur in search of her, living on the streets while he did so. After a year, he found her and began living with her in Jaipur. Both were already married to different people at that time, leading to objections from their respective families and eventually ending their relationship. During this period, the woman had a child, which led to Chahar’s decision of kidnapping the baby.
Chahar began asserting that the child was his and after failing to persuade the child’s mother to join him in UP, he made a desperate bid to reunite with her by kidnapping her daughter, hoping that the mother would come to him for the child’s sake.
Following the registration of the case, the UP Police took swift action, leading to Chahar’s suspension. Jaipur Police ASP Poonamchand Vishnoi revealed that while Chahar was absconding, he had been communicating with the child’s mother and was under surveillance. However, he evaded detection by frequently changing his phone and location, and even taunted the police, claiming they lacked the capability to catch him.
Currently in police custody, Chahar is still claiming the child as his own and demanding her return. Meanwhile, Kuku’s mother has expressed a clear desire to sever all ties with the accused.
