THRISSUR: “ An Unexpected recognition”, this was how C N Balakrishnan responded after he was named  as one of the ministers by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Thiruvananthapuram. After the news broke, supporters burst into celebration outside the DCC office by bursting crackers. Balakrishnan, who watched the announcement at  DCC office, said: “The decision was an unexpected one. I neither wished for nor asked for a ministerial post. It is the first time that C N Balakrishnan, fondly known as CN, contested  the election in his extensive political career spanning 30 years. He contested from Wadakkanchery and won against N R Balan of the LDF with a majority of 6,685 votes.  Balakrishnan belongs to the ‘I’ group. 76-year-old Balakrishnan was a   confidant of former Chief Minister K Karunakaran. It was C N Balakrishnan who took the initiative to build the Karunakaran Sapthati Mandiram where the Thrissur DCC office functions at present. CN started his political career through the Kerala Students Union. He has served as the treasurer, vice-president and president of the Thrissur DCC and has been the  KPCC treasurer for the past nine years.  He has been holding the post of  Khadi and Village Industries Association president for the past 32 years.  Balakrishnan was also a strong face in the cooperative sector in Thrissur. He was the district Co-operative Bank Association vice-president.  Balakrishnan was born as the sixth son of Narayanan and Paru Amma in Puzhakkal. He lives in Ayyanthol with his wife Thankamani Teacher and two daughters.
