MANGALORE: Two labourers were asphyxiated after being buried alive under a mound of mud which caved in on them while digging a 22-feet deep well in Haleyangady, near here, on Tuesday. The victims were identified as Madanappa (25) of Gangavathi and Sayed (65) of Mukka.Sources in Mulki police station said, “Rathi K Kukyan of Haleyangady had engaged a contractor Purandar to dig an open well in her land. The contractor had begun work on Sunday with six labourers from Koppal district. On Tuesday, at around 10.30 am, the soil caved in on four labourers working in the well. Two labourers Nagaraja and Sharanappa managed to clamber to safety. Madanappa and Sayed were buried in the mound. Labourers Lokesh and Hanumantha raised an alarm and attempted to rescue them. Fire personnel from Mulki were rushed to the spot and managed to extricate the corpses after a two-hour long operation, sources said. A case under negligence was registered at Mulki police station against the contractor, sources added.
