TRIPUNITHURA: The Puthiyakavu Market here celebrated ‘Pathamudayam’ (10th sunrise after Vishu) on Monday. Every year, on the tenth day of the Malayalam month of ‘Madam’, the residents here mark the day by exchanging money symbolising ancient tradition of barter. Agricultural produce like yam, colocasia, tapioca, turmeric, ginger etc adorned the shops.Traditional crafts and utensils like hand-woven umbrellas, baskets and trays were also displayed for sale as part of the celebrations. According to the tradition, ‘Pathamudayam’ is the day when the sun is most powerful and astrological science supports the believe. To symbolise the ten sunrises from Vishu, traditional oil lamps with 10 wicks are lit in every house. It is also considered to be one of the most auspicious days of the year and is sought out to start new ventures.
