Maargamitra, a mapping and trip planner project by Dr Ashish Verma, a professor at the Civil Engineering Department of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and his team, will assist you through your travel, with a few clicks.Maargamitra is a sponsored project, over which, Dr Verma and a team of 10 research fellows and students have been working on for two years. Their plan is to map the entire city’s public transportation system and provide users with seamless integration in which all transport options like Volvo buses, metro trains and regular buses would be considered.“For now the website will consider only Volvo, Big 10 and Metro Reach 1 options. One of our major challenges was gathering data about the regular routes and schedules of BMTC buses which are not with the BMTC themselves,” said Dr Verma, speaking to Express. He added that the team carried out mapping of routes and geo-tagging of bus stops themselves in some cases. “We will soon add all routes,” he said. Maargamitra works on Google Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers and gives users the option of choosing route plans based on minimum waiting time and minimum costs. It will  provide a listing of bus route numbers and fares, and also highlight route on Google Maps on the screen.“While the front end application is Google Maps, we have our own systems in the back end which crunch all the numbers,” Dr Verma added. A presentation on the project has been made to the BMTC and the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) and the team is now seeking funds to complete the work of adding more routes and other means of transport. Maargamitra till now has cost close to `10 lakh, including salaries of staff and a server which runs the website.Log onto planyourtrip.civil.iisc.ernet.in/first published:January 01, 1970, 05:30 ISTlast updated:January 01, 1970, 05:30 IST
