HYDERABAD: Except for a couple of translation errors, the Group I preliminary examination of the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) which was held across the state on Sunday passed off peacefully without any hitch.Very low turnout was witnessed to the exam as only about 1.7 lakh candidates (below 60 per cent) took the examination out of more than 3 lakh registered. The examination was held across the state in 740 centres and a huge number of candidates attended the exam in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts at 192 centres. One of the questions in English paper was -- Which is the longest river in the world? But in Telugu the question read as ‘Ati Pedda Nadi (biggest instead of longest) The answer for English question was Nile river and for Telugu it is Amazon river. The true translation of another question has also confused many students. The students were asked - When was the Right Livelihood award instituted? But the same in Telugu appeared as Jevinche Hakku Award Prarambinchabadina Smasthasaram? English questions were given on one side of the paper while Telugu questions on the other side of the same paper.Candidates who did not see the English version were confused about the above question and simply answered Amazon as the answer.Speaking to Express a Telugu medium aspirant, B Sriram said they came to know about the translation errors in the question papers after coming out of the exam hall, but they simply followed what they were given in Telugu paper. The candidates expect that the cut off marks to qualify for the mains would be around 90 marks this year, which is much higher than last year’s cut off of 83 marks.Chaitanya, a faculty member at a coaching centre, told Express that the cut off would go up as the question paper was easy compared to last year’s paper. As the APPSC had issued a notification for recruiting 314 posts into various departments in the state, the APPSC will have to qualify about 15,700 candidates to the mains to be held from September 3 to 12.The results of the prelims will be announced in the last week of June.
