CHENNAI: Traffic on the arterial Poonamalee High Road suffered heavily on Thursday morning as vehicles of some party functionaries blocked the road early on Thursday. With elections scheduled to be held next month, candidates from various parties thronged the Kilpauk corporation office to file nomination papers. Though adequate police was provided for smooth flow of events, commuters had to put up with traffic congestion due to the high-octane political activity. Party functionaries were busy celebrating their leaders filing nomination papers. That left McNichols Road (Chetpet Station access road) blocked, while parked vehicles along the Poonamalle High Road led to a traffic pileup, according to motorists.“The traffic is insane and it is a nightmare to cross this stretch,” said Maheshwaran, a motorist. The traffic police at the Ega and Taylor’s Road junctions were unable to handle the situation, said a cop under condition of anonymity. According to reports, three ambulances got stuck in the traffic and moved at snail’s pace in the section for an hour. Later normal traffic flow was restored.
