Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Swaraj Puri was removed from the post on Friday after a case was registered against him for allegedly committing fraud in getting his son admitted to an engineering college in Indore under NRI quota, official sources said.
Puri's removal came in wake of the state's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) registering a case of fraud, cheating and misuse of office against him, they said.
In compliance with an Indore court order on a petition seeking action against Puri, the EOW had initiated a probe into procedures followed for admission of his son Shreyas Puri in Shri Govindram Sakseria Institute of Technology and Sciences, the sources added.
The petitioner, former corporator Mahesh Garg, had alleged that Shreyas was admitted under NRI quota through a person called Babulal Somani who was described as his grandfather and sponsor.
The actual name of his grandfather was Vidyasagar Puri, Garg claimed.
Special Judge Akhilesh Pandya had on September 15, directed the EOW to probe the matter and submit a report on September 27.
When contacted, Puri declined to comment on the case saying it was sub-judice.
Puri, who was appointed DGP on April 1 last year, has been shunted out as DG of Home Guards, and state’s EOW Director General (DG) Anand Rao Panwar, a 1972-batch IPS officer, was asked to take over as DGP from Puri with immediate effect, they said.
O P Garg who will take charge from Panwar as EOW DG, the sources added.
