Come December, all educational institutions in Tamil Nadu would become ‘Tobacco Free Institutions’. R T Porkaipandian, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, recently wrote to authorities in Bharathiar University, asking them to take steps to ensure that the provisions of anti-tobacco rules were implemented in all affiliated colleges by December.
“We have written to all public and private universities in the State and School Education Department asking them to take steps to declare all educational institutions as tobacco free by December,” Porkaipandian told Express on Sunday.
“Tobacco is the most common preventable cause of death in the country and was identified as the main risk factor for a number of chronic diseases, including cancer, lung diseases and cardiovascular diseases,” Porkaipandian noted.
Talking to Express over phone, P Vadivelan, joint director of Public Health, said, “Our main objective is to prevent the youth from using tobacco products.”
Meanwhile, the Coimbatore City Police have cracked down on those selling tobacco products near educational institutions and booked three persons on Saturday.
