Three men were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly manhandling two policemen who had gone to Keezh Veedhi near Banavaram in mufti for an inquiry after receiving a tip off about bootlegging.
Police sources said the two head constables, Annamalai of Arcot Taluk Station and Samynathan of Kondapalayam, both aged about 40 and attached to the SP’s special party, had rushed to Keezh Veedi on Monday night after receiving a tip off about brewing and selling of illicit liquor in the locality.
They encountered an old offender, Palani (39), of Keel Veedhi and two of his friends Ponnusamy (28) and Settu (28) of the same village. The policemen asked them if they knew of anyone involved in selling illicit liquor or brewing arrack. Refusing to respond, Palani demanded to see their identity. Annamalai allegedly warned Palani stating that they were policemen. As Palani refused to budge, it led to a heated argument between them and soon escalated into a fisticuff. The men assaulted the policemen and fled from the scene.
Policemen attached to the Banavaram and Arakkonam stations rushed to the spot. The policemen were admitted to Government Hospital at Walajapet and discharged on Tuesday, said Arakkonam Deputy Superintendent of Police S Seetharaman.
“The policemen had gone dressed in lungi and shirt and had forgotten to carry their identity cards with them,” said a police officer.
Banavaram police registered a case against the trio under Sections 294 (b), 353, 332 and 506 (ii) of IPC and held them. They were remanded to custody and sent to the Vellore Central Prison for Men.
