Chennai: Amid heavy police deployment, more than 1,000 people from various Islamic groups staged a protest march from Kalaivanar Arangam to Chepauk against the CAA, NRC and NPR. The protesters raised slogans demanding the AIADMK government to move a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and to ensure that NRC is not implemented in the state.
“We will continue our protest. We don’t belong to any political party and our fight is against CAA and NRC. We hope the AIADMK government understands our sentiments.” said one of the protesters.
DMK, CPI took part in the protest and said they will intensity protests against the Edappadi K Palaniswami government.
The protest took place despite a Madras High Court order denying permission for the march towards Tamil Nadu Secretariat. M Sathyanaraya and R Hemalatha passed the order on a PIL seeking direction to the police to restrain the protesters from holding the rally.
The movement of vehicles was restricted and traffic came to a standstill at Mount Road.
Politics over CAA continues in the state with the AIADMK and DMK exchanging heated arguments in the ongoing Assembly session. The DMK has taken the issue to New Delhi by submitting the signature of over two crore people who are against the CAA in the state to President Ram Nath Kovind.
On February 14, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister reiterated in the Assembly that protests are instigated. This came two days after police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd and said that protesters damaged public property and hurled stones at police officers.
Meanwhile, hundreds continue to protest at Old Washermanpet in North Chennai for the sixth continuous day.
