BANGALORE: Parks are always envisaged as places of peace and relaxation. The elderly come here to take long strolls in order to keep themselves hale and healthy. The tiny tots come here to play and go return home with sand in their hair and hands dirty.A few come here to contemplate about life and the others to just a take a break from their routine life. While the city has no dearth of parks, a few do not seem to be serving their purpose well enough. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) park on Venkatswamy Naidu Road has a story to tale and story is not a fairytale. There are bricks discarded everywhere. Huge slabs of stone occupy a majority of the space. The children’s play area acts as a dumping ground for all kinds with not a minuscule of concern towards the many young children who come here to play on an everyday basis.A portion of the park has also been disposed off with everything from coconut shells to daily household waste. A small pool present at the centre of the lake is contaminated with all kinds of insects and algae and requires urgent attention. The picture that is painted is not a pretty one. Ashika, a visitor to the park, said, “It is sad to see that the park has been let to deteriorate upto this extent. There are bricks falling off from everywhere. Drunkards have made it their home.To add on, it is quite difficult to walk through. If not for the other areas of the park, they should definitely clean up the area where the kids come to play.” Posters instructing people not to dirty the premises of the park go unnoticed. The proof of it lies in the fact that plastic lies everywhere from the running tracks to the grass area. The slight ray of hope in this quite dull situation arises from the fact that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) seems to have plans on making it a better place.Fencing for the park has begun in full force. Sources say that it will also be cleaned up soon. Given its key location, one would expect the BBMP to do a good job of recovering the lost glory of the park.
