HYDERABAD:Minister for Tourism and Culture Vatti Vasantha Kumar assured a Telugu chair would be set up in at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Mauritius as a platform for all Telugus in the world.Speaking at the inaugural session of the threeday World Telugu Conference at Phoenix in Mauritius, Vasantha Kumar said the state government would allocate Rs 10 lakh every year for the Telugu chair. The funds could be utilised for protecting Telugu culture and for research in Telugu, he added. The minister said the government was spending Rs 40 crore for digitisation of Telugu folk arts, music and dance and other art forms.Primary education minister S Sailajanath called upon Telugus to protect the language from threat of globalisation. He said the state government had decided to supply textbooks free of cost to Telugu students in different states. The state would also bear transportation charges, he added. Sailajanath conveyed best wishes to the conference organisers on behalf of chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy.Representatives from India, USA, Malaysia, South Africa, Fiji, UK and Mauritius attended the meeting. Mauritius minister Deva Veera Swamy, who has his roots in Andhra Pradesh, said Telugus in Mauritius were heirs of labourers who migrated to the country some 150 years ago.Mauritius cultural minister Mukeswar Chuni described Mauritius as miniIndia. Chuni said his country would respect people of all countries, tribes and languages. He released a special postal cover on this occasion. At a seminar on Telugu language, Muniratnam Naidu, Reddy Syamala, J Chennaiah, Samudrala Baburao, P Apparao, P Chenna Reddy, Ramaswamy and Dodla Bheemaiah presented papers on various Telugu topics.
