Bhopal: Famous online video sharing app TikTok, a medium meant for personal creativity and recreation, is meeting other purposes nowadays like reuniting separated couples and landing tech savvy criminals in jail. One such habitual thief was caught by Madhya Pradesh (MP) police in Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) recently.
A native of Bihar, the thief has been arrested by MP police in connection with thefts in Ratlam and Ujjain earlier this year.
The culprit and his associate were involved in several thefts inside running trains in Ujjain and Ratlam in February and March this year. To avoid getting caught, the shrewd thief used over
three dozen mobile handsets to prevent the police from tracking his location. Ultimately, his craze for TikTok videos brought about his downfall.
The accused, Mukesh Safi, is originally from Madhubani in Bihar and was presently living in Ghaziabad, said Rakesh Khakha, ASP (Rail) of Indore. Mostly active in the Delhi-Mumbai rail route, he has been accused of stealing cash and valuables worth Rs 2.25 lakh.
Mukesh was an active user of Facebook and used to upload his TikTok videos on the social networking site regularly. Police learnt that he was using stolen cell phones to record and upload his videos on social media, which ultimately led to his arrest.
Rahul, the said mastermind of the gang, is on the run while another member Qayyum was arrested by the police earlier. Qayyum was the one who informed the police about Mukesh’s obsession of regularly uploading TikTok videos on FB.
Police identified him through his online videos and the Government Railway Police (GRP) sought help from the cyber cell. They used CCTV footage and mobile surveillance to finally nab the tech-savvy thief.
Valuables worth Rs two lakh including cell phones were seized by the police from the possession of Mukesh.
The incident comes after a string of other cases where the video platform was used for purposes other than what it is meant for. In June this year, a woman in Tamil Nadu allegedly committed suicide after her husband scolded her for using TikTok.
In another incident in May, a TikTok celebrity with half a million followers was shot dead in Delhi.
