Pune: Two more H1N1 Influenza A patients (swine flu) succumbed to their illness in Pune taking the total death toll to eight in the country.
Shruti Gawde, a 13-year-old student of Ahilya Devi School, Narayanpeth in Pune became the eighth victim of swine flu virus and died at 0130 hrs IST on Tuesday. Just a few hours earlier a 35-year-old pharmacist became the seventh person to die of swine flu.
Shruti was initially admitted at KEM Hospital and then was transferred to Sassoon Hoapital where she breathed her last
She was diagnosed with H1N1 on August 8 and was administered Tamiflu even at KEM. The teenager had also complained of severe cough and breathlessness. She is the sixth Pune resident to die because of swine flu.
The city has been the worst hit by swine flu in India.
Earlier, on Monday evening 35-year-old pharmacist Sanjay Bahausaheb Tilekar who had been in critical condition for the past few days, died at Sassoon.
Tilekar was shifted from private Nobel hospital to Sassoon Hospital on Thursday after his condition deteriorated.
Two more swine flu patients had died on Monday taking the death toll in the country to six.
An Ayurvedic doctor, who was working for Sassoon Hospital, died of swine flu-related complications while Balasaheb Laxman Mane, a private practioner was brought to the hospital on August 7 with severe broncho-pneumonia after he tested positive on August 6 too succumbed to the virus.
The first death due to the deadly virus also took place in Pune on August 3 when 14-year old Rida Shaikh succumbed to swine flu.
Pune’s civic authorities have already directed all schools, colleges, cinema halls and shopping malls to shut down from Monday in an attempt to arrest the spread of swine flu in the city.
A state government spokesman said that schools and colleges have been closed for the entire week while cinema halls have been be shut down for three days.
Meanwhile, a senior doctor from Sasson Hospital said that the patients who test positive for the swine flu and are critical are kept in their hospital while others are being transferred to Naidu Hospital.
