Mumbai: Actor Kamal Hasan is passionate about singing but would prefer fewer song and dance numbers in Indian cinema.
Hasan, who is also an established director, told the Mumbai Mirror newspaper that he has sung some 50 songs in his own movies, mainly in Tamil.
"As an actor, songs often seem stupid," the paper quoted him as saying. "In our films everyone ... sings and dances. I'm fed up of bringing music into every aspect of life on screen."
Hasan said he has choreographed at least 100 songs. Even when he played a psychopath in a Tamil movie Red Rose, he was expected to belt out songs before he managed to convince his director that a murderer wouldn't spend too much time crooning.
"Everyone expected me to go on stage and sing a pop number with girls," Hasan told the Mumbai paper. "I told my director that a serial killer doesn't sing."
Hasan began his career as a child artist in 1960 and has starred in more than 150 Indian movies. He has acted in films in five languages - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
