The DMC (Amendment) Bill was passed by Delhi Assembly on December 1, paving the way for trifurcation of MCD.

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday met Home Minister P Chidambaram and is understood to have briefed him about the ongoing process of trifurcating the municipal corporation.

Sources said Dikshit told Chidambaram about the administrative steps being taken by the city government to complete the process of splitting the civic agency.

Municipal polls slated for March will be held for three new municipalties by splitting MCD. The city government had on January 30 appointed head of the Directorate of Municipal Services (DMS) which will carry out the ground work for splitting MCD.

The DMS will set up the administrative structure of the three municipal bodies and coordinate their functioning.

The Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill was passed by Delhi Assembly on December 1, paving the way for trifurcation of MCD. The Bill was given assent by President Pratibha Patil in December last year, following which the city government notified it as an Act.

As per the Act, MCD will be split into North, South and East Delhi municipal corporations and 50 per cent of total 272 seats will be reserved for women as against 33 per cent now.

The North and South Delhi bodies will have 104 wards each, while the civic body in East Delhi will have 64 wards.

The Union Home Ministry had cleared the proposal in November, five months after receiving it from the Delhi government.

Sources said Dikshit discussed certain issues relating to welfare of minority community.
