THIRUVANANTHAPURAM The State Government has approached the Centre for assistance to implement the endosulfan package, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said after a Cabinet meeting. Rs 500 crore would be required to implement an NHRC proposal to provide compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the victims. The government has sanctioned Rs 1 lakh each to the families of the victims of the tragedy, he said.TOLL ACT REVISEDThere will be no toll levied for bridges the construction cost of which is Rs 5 crore or less, Chandy said. The Cabinet decided to up the ceiling for levying tolls from Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore by amending the Toll Act, 1976, he said. The revision will be applicable to existing bridges also, he said.NEW LAW FOR LIFTSThe State Government is planning to bring a piece of legislation for the erection, operation and maintenance of lifts and escalators. The Cabinet meeting approved the proposal for the new law. Poll EXPENDITUREThe time-frame for elected members of panchayats and municipalities for submitting details of their election expenditure will be increased from three months to 15 months, the Chief Minister said. A new legislation is planned in this regard. The immediate reason for such a step is that most members have not submitted the details.SOLATIUMThe Cabinet approved a solatium of Rs 5 lakh to Bharathi, an employee at the Chitra Tile Company in Thrissur, who lost both her legs in a mishap. Rs 2 lakh each was sanctioned for the families of Anoop of Thrissur who was murdered and KSEB overseer Sivadasan who was electrocuted while effecting repairs on a faulty line.DEVELOPMENT AGENCYRules for forming a Hill Area Development Agency in place of the Hill Area Development Authority have been approved.
