Fish resources will double from 1.5 lakh tonnes to three lakh tonnes in the next three years, Fisheries Minister K Babu said.
He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘Sea Ranch’ initiative in the sea off Vizhinjam. The initiative is part of the ‘Matsya Samridhi’ project. The ‘Modha’ fish were dropped in specially created habitats 22 nautical miles off Vizhinjam. Other varieties of fish will be added to the project if the pilot project is found successful, the minister said.
A project to enhance fish resources in the inland water bodies will be inaugurated at Karunagappally on October 12.
