BHUBANESWAR: Nandankanan Zoological Park has become the first animal park in India to have installed close circuit TVs (CCTVs) in tiger enclosure. Following the recommendation of the Central Zoo Authority, after death of five cubs last month, the Nandankanan authorities have installed CCTVs in the enclosure of Sara, a tigress which was brought from the wild in Madhya Pradesh. The tigress is due for delivery next month. While two cameras have been fitted inside the enclosure to keep a 24x7 vigil on the expectant tigress, another has been installed in the crawl anticipating that Sara might deliver outside the enclosure area. Zoo Director Sudarshan Panda said a personnel has also been employed to operate and monitor the CCTVs while the Veterinary Assistant Surgeon and Assistant Director of the Zoo are keeping a watch on the large cat on a regular basis. “This has been done in keeping with the CZA recommendation while the arrangement will continue in days to come,” Panda informed. After five cubs died in the Zoo in November, the CZA had sent a two-member team to inspect and submit a report in which they had suggested that CCTV monitoring could improve the newborn management of large cats.FOUNDATION DAY: Earlier in the day, the 52nd foundation day of Nandankanan Zoological Park was observed in a simple function. Secretary, Forest and Environment Department, RK Sharma was chief guest of the occasion, while Chief Wildlife Warden JD Sharma presided over the function. To mark the day, 20 animal keepers of various Zoos of Eastern India were awarded the certificates for participation in the 15-day “Keepers Training on Carnivore Management.” Similarly, 20 staff members of Nandankanan were given away prizes for their outstanding performance in their duty in enclosure maintenance, security, electricity and water supply maintenance.
