THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Smart Classrooms will join a centuries-old pursuit of mankind, horse riding, at the Sainik School, Kazhakkoottam, as the 50-year-old school gears up to improve its training facilities. The school, set in a sprawling campus 12 km from the city, has approached the Indian Army and the Mysore Race Club for eight horses for training the cadets, school principal Group Captain B Janardhanan said. ‘’We hope to open the riding school by August-September. The riding school, which will be a full-fledged one, is expected to cost Rs. 73 lakh,’’ Janardhanan said on the sidelines of the ‘Kazhak Expo-2011’ here on the Kanakakkunnu grounds on Friday.Apart from creating equestrian experts, who are still held in high esteem in the Armed Forces, horse riding will help instill confidence in the cadets, he said. The school owned four horses till 2003-04, but the training then had been largely informal and the animals were not replaced after they died. The people of Thiruvananthapuram are no strangers to horses as the Kerala Mounted Police, one of the oldest regiments of the state police, is stationed here. Horseriding might be an old pursuit, but the Sainik School is not ignoring the e-age. Celebrating its golden jubilee this year, the school is also planning to introduce Smart Classrooms.Audio-visual aids in teaching will take academics to a newer, higher level, school officials feel. Primarily intended to provide cadets to the National Defence Academy (NDA) and subsequently to the Armed Forces, the Sainik School at Kazhakkoottam has 597 boarders at present. The school is also planning to open a new academic block and later, one more hostel.
