Safety aspects of radiation departments to get focus

The safety aspects of the radiation departments of the medical colleges will be given more focus and would be made absolutely safe, said Health Minister V S Sivakumar.

He said this while inaugurating the statewide inauguration of the continuous medical education programme for radiographers organised by the Directorate of Radiation Safety.

“At a time when the public is apprehensive about the radiation from the mobile towers, the government has the responsibility to ensure that the radiation from the x-ray and gamma ray units are within limits,” said the Minister.

Kerala is the first state to form a separate directorate for radiation safety and has been a role model for other states in matters of safety, said the Minister.

“The government has decided to allot land for setting up a radiation testing lab as well,” he said.

The meet that was presided over by V S Iyer, a senior scientific officer with the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board had the state radiation safety director K A David presenting the report.

Medical Education Department joint director Jyotheendrakumar, additional director of health services N Sreedhar, Association of Medical Physicists president Raghuram K Nair and Indian society of radiographers and technologists Kerala chapter president M J Joseph, spoke on the occasion.
