The safety aspects of the radiation departments of the medical colleges will be given more focus and would be made absolutely safe, said Health Minister V S Sivakumar.
He said this while inaugurating the statewide inauguration of the continuous medical education programme for radiographers organised by the Directorate of Radiation Safety.
“At a time when the public is apprehensive about the radiation from the mobile towers, the government has the responsibility to ensure that the radiation from the x-ray and gamma ray units are within limits,” said the Minister.
Kerala is the first state to form a separate directorate for radiation safety and has been a role model for other states in matters of safety, said the Minister.
“The government has decided to allot land for setting up a radiation testing lab as well,” he said.
The meet that was presided over by V S Iyer, a senior scientific officer with the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board had the state radiation safety director K A David presenting the report.
Medical Education Department joint director Jyotheendrakumar, additional director of health services N Sreedhar, Association of Medical Physicists president Raghuram K Nair and Indian society of radiographers and technologists Kerala chapter president M J Joseph, spoke on the occasion.
