New Delhi: Filmmakers have often used the audio-visual medium to focus on social evils and hollow traditions. Ashok Nanda is the latest director on the block who wants to draw attention towards the plight of the women who are trapped in institutionalized prostitution via his film 'Rivaaz'.
The film revolves around the old custom of patronized flesh business, where the whole community rather the whole social system is getting benefited on the expense of a pubescent girl's plight.
'Rivaaz' deals with a patriarchal set up that sends its daughters to rich people when they turn 18.
The village oligarchs are used to feed upon the daughters' pain, and thus they push the tradition further.
Their supremacy gets challenged when Bela, played by Ritisha Vijayvargya, refuses to turn into a conventional prostitute. Unfortunately, she has no one to seek help from in an unjust fight. Bela does an even worse mistake by falling in love.
Bela's mother knows the consequences of falling in love. Long time ago, she had committed the same grave mistake, and her lover was brutally murdered by the villagers.
She is much subdued now, up to such an extent that she is completely passive about every proceeding.
Ashok Nanda has picked up a story, which is true for several villages even after 64 years of independence. Prostitution is still existent in several parts of the country right under the nose of the rule makers. In fact, the flesh business can't sustain without administrative support.
'Rivaaz' also explores the relationship between the mother Deepti Naval and her three daughters, played by Ritisha, Meghna Naidu and Sadhika Randhawa.
Known for her her subtle acting, Deepti Naval was last seen in 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'. Her earlier trysts with issue oriented films have won her accolades from all quarters. Naval's memorable roles in films such as 'Chasme Buddoor', 'Damul', 'Mirch Masala', 'Shakti-The Power', 'Leela', 'Freaky Chakra', and 'Firaaq' have established her as a woman of substance, and thus it would be interesting for the viewers to see her again in a subject driven film.
'Rivaaz' can't boast of big stars but film's other heroine Meghna Naidu is not an alien face. However, Meghna is better known for her skin show than acting.
Film's cast also includes Alok Nath, Vijay Raaz, Sayaji Shinde and Yashpal Sharma. These actors are not crowd pullers but certainly they have a face value, and the opening of the film will depend a lot on them.
