CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday ordered the renovation of 50-year-old Aalamarathu Iyarkkai Vinayakar temple at Omandurar Government Estate. The temple, which was partially shifted by the previous DMK regime to construct the new Secretariat and to re-install idols of all 23 parivara murthis which were removed from the temple complex in 2008.When the DMK regime decided to shift the temple to some other place, a petition was filed before the Madras High Court challenging the decision in 2008. Following this, the previous government had decided to leave the Vinayakar temple there itself by providing a fence for six feet and to remove the idols of 23 parivara murthis including Vishnu, Durga, Saraswathi and Anjaneyar to other places chosen by the Public Works Department. Since then, the devotees have been worried about this as it would not be proper to have the presiding deity of a temple at one place and the parivara murthis somewhere else. On knowing this, the Chief Minister ordered the reinstallation of idols shifted from the temple and to renovate the entire temple by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department at a cost of `18.50 lakh. Kumbhabhiksekham for the temple will be performed by the end of the year.
