The Supreme Court decision to put a stay on all quota proceedings invokes strong - mostly favourable - reactions from the readers of IBNLive.com.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court decision to stall all quota proceedings has set in motion a wave of reactions on IBNLive.com with most readers welcoming the court ruling.

Said one enthusiastic reader Shweta Ranjan, “Here comes the verdict of Rising India. Hats off to SC for standing up to people's expectations and getting caught in dirty web of politics. It’s high time UPA government realised and put a halt to cheap votebank politics.”

Agreed Sanjay, “Quota is like apartheid. It favours one citizen at the cost of another. SC has done justice to everyone by stopping quotas for OBC.”

Many said the stay order comes as an indication of the system being fair. “At last a stay which keeps the glimmer of hope that this country still has some one to depend on to secure a fair place to stay,” said Mahesh.

Many readers also said that the ocurt verdict restores their faith in India as being a country where "the mind is without fear". Said B Natarajan, “The Supreme court judgement has ensured that we are not losing that country. In October 2006, while various deemed universities in India said that they would wait, watch and ultimately toed the government line, BITS Pilani's bold stand that it would not implement quotas and reservations in admissions shook the conscience of the nation. For BITS Pilani, courage has always been what it takes to stand up and speak. It’s for nothing Andrew Jackson said "One man with courage makes a majority".

Another reader Mohan Kartha also pointed out an interesting trend in Tamil Nadu. “When I went for admission of my daughter in Class I in a famous convent in Chennai, I found majority of the parents who had come in flashy cars had ration card showing they are Backward Class. Were they that is anybody's guess. In Tamil Nadu, which has the maximum reservation on caste basis, majority of families are taking ration cards by dubious means and proving they are from backward class,”

However, not many readers were as enthusiastic. “Well, IIM should go on with the increased no.of seats. Keep the quota ratio same as earlier years. This way both general and reserved categories will have more no. of selected candidates,” said a reader Dr Nitin.

Agreed Sooraj TS, “Reservations are a necessity, without reservations it is not possible for those in the backward castes to come into the mainstream. Very less from the backward classes can get into IITs and IIMs. This ruling will take away the faith from law among the common people.”

The aggressive, youthful spirit that was synonymous with the reservation row in the summer of 2006 also echoed in the reader responses. But this time, it was more of a pro-quota rhetoric. A reader who chose to call himself Jai Hind wrote in, “Yes a new campaign with more intensity need to be started. There is a conspiracy to throttle the primary education and divide the higher education. The question that needs to be asked is - why 19 institutions of defense and strategic importance were kept out of reservation? Is the government implying that the OBCs are a security threat?”
