Ajmer: Eight infants have died in two days at Jawaharlal Nehru government hospital in Ajmer allegedly due to medical negligence. The paediatrician department has, however, claimed that there was no negligence and the infants were brought to the hospital in a critical state.
"These are all incidental deaths. They are all because of different diseases. There are doctors who are regularly available in the hospital. There has been no negligence."
"They were suffering from septicaemia, premature birth and respiratory problems," CMHO Ajmer Dr KK Soni said.
The District Magistrate has ordered a probe and samples of medicines given to the infants have been sent for tests. "It is unusual for so many infants to die within a short span which is why we are taking all the precautionary and remedial measures required. The doctors are on the job, a panel is looking into the matter. If any negligence on the part of doctors or nursing staff is found, there will be action against them," District Collector Gaurav Goyal said.
The newborns were from Bhilwara, Merta city, Pisangan, Nasirabad and Beawar.
Families of other patients admitted in the hospital have also claimed that no facilities are being provided at the hospital. "My nephew is under treatment here for jaundice complications but the doctors are not available for patients, the senior doctor hasn't come since morning. The conditions inside the ward are bad, there's no water available here at all.
Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot alleged that the death of the newborns was due to carelessness of doctors and demanded a high-level inquiry into it. "The newborns were not treated properly due to absence of senior doctors. They died due to carelessness of doctors," he alleged. Pilot accused the Rajasthan government of "trying to cover up" the matter.
