Emami Chisel Art Pvt Ltd is proud to announce its auction of Indian Contemporary and Modern Art. The hammer comes down for the second time this year on the November 8, 2008 at 1830 hrs IST at Emami Towers, 687 Anandapur, EM Bypass, Kolkata 700107.
The auction of Indian Contemporary and Modern Art consists of diverse works from various artists across the country, therefore proving to be a collector’s delight. In this auction ‘No Reserve’ price will be marked against the works. An amalgamation of specially selected art works has been possible by the active support and cooperation from various galleries and collectors in India. The 105 lots will comprise of distinct art works of 89 artists.
The auction has a few revelations in store such as an oil on canvas work by NS Bendre (22 – 25 lakhs US$ 51,163 – US$ 58,140), JSwaminathan’s ‘Bird, Tree & Mountain series’ estimated between 65 lakhs – 79 lakhs ( US$ 1,51,163 – US$ 1,74,419 ) , Two works by Bikash Bhattacharjee‘ titled “ Portrait of __! “ estimated between 45 lakhs to 50 lakhs ( US$ 1,04,651 – US$ 1,16,279) and the second estimated between 40 lakhs to 45 lakhs ( US$ 93,023 – US$ 1,04,651 ) from the artist’s principal period, the 1980’s. Ganesh Pyne’s – ‘The Flower’, which is tempera on canvas estimated between 40 lakhs to 50 lakhs (US$ 93,023 – US$ 1,16,279) is truly a rare and exclusive work.
Chittrovanu Mazumdar (20 lakhs – 22 lakhs , US$ 46,512 – US$ 51,163 ), as well as a rare work by Subodh Gupta estimated between 28 lakhs to 32 lakhs ( US$ 65,116 – US$ 74,419 ) is a part of this auction. There is also a novelty work by Arpita Singh estimated between 80 lakhs to 1 crore ( US$ 1,86,047 – US$ 2,32,558 ). Besides this Emami Chisel Art will auction works of M.F. Husain, one of the three works is the Doll Series estimated between 6 lakhs to 8lakhs ( US$ 13,953 – US$ 18,605 ) .

Ram Kumar’s Landscape ( 22 lakhs – 25 lakhs US$ 51,163 – US$ 58,140), and Jogen Chowdhury’s wounded (man) an exceptional cross hatch work ( 20 lakhs- 25 lakhs, US$ 46,512 -58,140) anticipates to bring exhilaration to the auction. Apart from this the auction comprises of works by S.H. Raza’s, Bindu estimated between 18 lakhs to 20 lakhs( US$ 41,860 – US$ 46,512 ), Baiju Parthan, Atul Dodiya, Sheila Makhijani, Reena Saini Kallat, Riyas Komu, Hema Upadhyay, Jitish Kallat to name a few.
Handpicked works of Somnath Hore, Paritosh Sen, Ganesh Haloi , Kartick Chandra Pyne , Jayashree Chakravorty, Chhatrapati Dutta, Sekhar Roy, Samindranath Majumdar, Chandra Bhattacharjee, Farhad Hussain, Kishore Shinde, K.G. Subramanyan,Sohan Qadri will go under the hammer.
The other focal point of the auction apart from paintings & drawings are photographs & sculptures. Photograph’s by Rameshwar Broota as well as Gigi Scaria’s City Up rise are a part of this auction.
Apart from this is Sudarshan Shetty’s ‘car’ sculpture, acrylic on fiber glass is estimated between 16 lakhs-18 lakhs( US$ 37,209 – US$ 41,860) , which is a unique work. Bose Krishnamachari’s sculpture ( 18 lakhs- 20 lakhs ,US$ 41,860 – US$ 46,512) , with a self portrait on it, is a true one of its kind work.. Video art by Surekha will be auctioned for the very first time titled ‘Between Fire and Sky.’
The video art is based on the unnatural death of women in the city of Bangalore. She has drawn attention to the relationship between the body and natural elements , fire and water that are the primary tools used by women to end their lives. This video is a two channel projection.

Emami Chisel Art is a collaborative effort of the reputed Emami Group and Chisel Art- a parent company of Aakriti Art Gallery. The online preview begins on the 1st of November 2008 onwards which can be viewed on the ECA website www.emamichisel.com.
The online bidding begins on the November 8, 2008 at 6.30 pm which culminates on the November 8, 2008 with a floor auction. The auction will be conducted by Angira Arya and Cyrus Madan.
