KOZHIKODE: While Prakash Karat, 64, remains at the helm of the CPM for a third consecutive term, VS Achuthanandan, the most popular face of the party in the state, will continue to nurse his wounds. Achuthanandan, removed from the politburo in 2009 for breach of party discipline, was denied a berth in the politburo on Monday, while former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was retained despite his absence at the 20th party congress here.Achuthanandan, who continues to be a central committee member, left the party congress in a huff without attending the public meeting in the evening saying he will remain a steadfast member of the party. The curtain fell on the six-day party congress with the re-election of Karat as general secretary and the election of a 15-member politburo and 89-member central committee. This would be the last term for Karat as the party has amended its constitution to limit the tenure of party secretaries to three terms.
