Seven states in North India have been facing a long power cut since late Sunday night. Due to a massive breakdown in the northern grid, there has been a major power failure which has affected seven north Indian states. There is no power in Delhi and neighbouring states since 2 am.

Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan are the states affected. Train services have also been affected by the power failure in North India.

The Metro service in Delhi was also hit. While 25 per cent of the Metro train services resumed, the interval between trains was longer. Forty Northern Railway trains were also running late.

CPRO for Northern Railways Neeraj Sharma said power supply has been partially restored allowing some trains to move. "Many trains on the adjoining networks have been held up in different stations. Power supply has been partially restored. Trains have started moving in the Delhi division. Trains which were held up have been moved with diesel engines."

Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said that it'll take another one and a half hour's time to restore power. "My officers are on the spot. The fault is found near Agra. It will be corrected in one and a half hour's time," he said.

However, the BSES said that it'll take four to five hours to restore power. "Northern grid collapsed due to heavy demand in the last few days. Deficient rainfall and on the other hand sowing season is making farmers depend more on ground water which increased demand in the last few days. It will take four to five hours to repair," BSES officials said.

Power Grid Chairman Ram N Naik said generators are being brought in to connect essential loads like hospitals, airports and stations.

Emergency power services were provided to the VVIP areas.
