PUDUCHERRY: Police have sought help of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to interrogate Mohamed Ismail Sheik from Jharkhand who was arrested on January 19 on charges of circulating fake currency and suspected to be part of a major international racket and a larger conspiracy to destabilise the nation by pumping in fake currency.Briefing newsmen at a press conference on Saturday, Inspector General of Police J K Sharma said he had requested the director general of NIA to send a team to interrogate Mohamed Ismail Sheik and find out the linkages. NIA had also agreed to assist and share information for the investigation , he said.“We have also requested central agencies to come and assist us to find facts, so that interstate ramifications can be unearthed and enable a thorough probe to catch the members of the gang involved in the racket and other gangs associated with it,” said Sharma.“The involvement and background of the arrested person points to a bigger conspiracy. The areas from where they hail and the fake currency they obtained points to an international racket. These areas also match the places from where fake currency has been recovered in the past,” said the IGP.A detailed probe has already begun with police on the trail of all the accomplices of Sheik who escaped from here.He said all three special task force teams were assisting the CID in the investigation. Around five to six teams are being sent to various cities in India including Malda in West Bengal, several places in Jharkhand, Chennai to get further information on the racket. A number of details were required to link the threads,” said the IGP.Ismail was arrested after a fruit stall owner at Gorimedu became suspicious when he had tendered a Rs 1,000 note for fruits purchased by him. The shop owner on the alibi of getting change discussed with an autodriver, who intimated the D Nagar police. The police arrested Ismail Sheikh and recovered counterfeit currency notes, from him, with a total face value of Rs 1.9 lakh.The IGP rewarded the fruit vendor Satish, auto driver Swaminathan and three police constables Shinoj, Manikandan and Rajkumar with Rs 500, a commendation certificate and a memento. SSP (Law and Order ) V J Chandran and other officers were present.
