BHUBANESWAR: The State Government on Tuesday dismissed the former Inspector In-charge (IIC) of the Pipili police station from service over the gangrape case following the statewide outcry over the failure of the police to register a complaint. Puri district SP A N Sinha was also shifted in this connection.  Director-General of Police Manmohan Praharaj told this paper that the suspended IIC, Amulya Champatiray, has been dismissed from service. Sources said the police official has been dismissed as per Article 311 of the Constitution. The DGP had earlier suspended the IIC for not registering the FIR of the girl’s family. Though the family had lodged an FIR at Pipili police station on November 29, 2011, a day after the incident, police only registered the case on January 9, 2012 following the intervention of the Orissa Human Rights Commission (OHRC). Home Secretary U N Behera told mediapersons here that Sinha has been posted as the commandant of the Special Operations Group (SOG), Odisha’s elite anti-Naxalite force. He has been replaced by Anup Kumar Sahu, SP of Koraput district. SOG Commandant Awinash Kumar has been posted as Koraput SP. The decision to shift the Puri SP came following a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday in which he reviewed the law and order situation. Naveen had directed the DGP to ensure that cases of atrocities against women are addressed on a priority basis. The Chief Minister  had warned police officers of stringent action in case of default in registration of offences against women. Agriculture Minister and Pipili MLA Pradeep Maharathy had to step down on moral grounds for allegedly harbouring the accused in the case. However, the demand for the resignation of the Chief Minister and a CBI probe into the incident continued as several organisations and Opposition parties protested at different parts of the State, including the capital city. The State Government has ordered a judicial probe, headed by retired judge of the Orissa High Court Justice P K Mohanty, into the incident. Besides, the Crime Branch is also probing the case. All the four accused in the case have been arrested by the Crime Branch.
