PG medical student commits suicide over fee hike
The 25-year-old postgraduate medical student tried to kill himself last week allegedly over fee hike.

Ahmedabad: A 25-year-old postgraduate medical student who tried to kill himself last week allegedly over fee hike succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, police said.

"Dr Neeraj Jhadhav, a first year PG student pursuing Master in Surgery at NHL Municipal Medical College, affiliated to V S Hospital, had jumped from the hostel building over fee hike issue on August 31. He succumbed to his injuries today," said the police.

A case of accidental death has been registered at the Ellisbridge police station in Ahmedabad.

Jhadav's family members have claimed that their son was depressed after the announcement to raise fees was made.

The High Court-appointed Fee Regulatory Committee recently announced a hike in fees from Rs 2.5 lakh per annum to Rs 4 lakh for all self-finances and private colleges in the state.

"The state fee regulatory committee hiked the fee from Rs 2.5 lakh per annum to Rs 4 lakh, applying from this year. However, its implementation has been differed till April next year on the directives of Mayor and municipal health commissioner," a hospital official said on condition of anonymity.

The V S Hospital is managed and governed by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
